Making a family photo work on canvas
Family photos are usually taken for the people in them rather than for the wall, which means the composition needs a second look before printing. Check where everyone's heads sit in the frame: if they are near the top edge, a gallery wrap will pull part of that around the side of the stretcher.
Group shots generally do better at 24x36 or larger. At 16x20 an eight-person photo renders each face at roughly the size of a coin, and the image reads as a crowd rather than as your family.
Mixed indoor lighting is the other common issue — a photo shot half under a window and half under warm bulbs will show that split more plainly on canvas than on a screen. We correct obvious colour casts as part of standard prepress, at no extra cost.

Practical notes
- Leave headroom
- Aim for a few centimetres of space above the tallest person so the gallery wrap does not clip anyone.
- Bigger for groups
- One or two people work at 16x20. Four or more read better at 24x36 and up.
- Scanned prints are fine
- Older photographs scan well. Scan at 600 dpi or higher and send the untouched file.
Frequently asked questions
Can you print an old photo that is damaged?
Minor scratches and fading can often be improved during prepress. Send us the scan first and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth printing large.
What size works above a sofa?
24x36 is the usual answer. Artwork should span roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it.
Can I order several canvases in different sizes?
Yes, and printing them in one order keeps the colour consistent across the set.
How do I hang it?
Every canvas ships ready to hang with hardware attached. No framing shop visit required.
